Captains Newsletter August

Here we are, already into our second week in August.  Golf seemed to be returning to some sort of normality, with the opportunity to have food and drinks again at the end of a round. At Bramhall we’d even managed to get back in the clubhouse, suitably distanced of course, but unfortunately, we’re in the Greater Manchester area and back with extra restrictions again! Thank goodness for the marquee that’s been erected, even though it’s a bit draughty sometimes.

Our competitions have started again, with the first one being the Margaret Sangster Salver.  This was held on Wednesday 29 July at Heswall Golf Club.  The weather was excellent and the course was immaculate. Many thanks to Heswall for hosting the competition. There was an excellent entry of 36 players in the + to 20 handicap category. In 2019 five handicapper Wad Grayson (Ringway GC) was the winner of the coveted trophy at Stockport. And history was made this year as her 16-year old 15 handicap daughter Siobhan posted a nett 73 to take top spot and become, so we believe, the first ever mother and daughter combination to win the trophy in successive years with the same nett score!

The runner-up was Christine Orchard (Delamere Forest GC) with 74, with Gillian Singh (Prestbury) and Barbara Jamieson (Heswall) both on 76, with Barbara having the best gross of 76.

All these details are on our website, and on our new Facebook page!! Yes, we’ve taken another move into the 21st century and now have our own Facebook page, keeping you up to date with what’s happening in the County. We hope that you will follow us on Cheshire County Ladies Golf Association by clicking here Listed there are forthcoming competitions too, both for CCLGA, CCSLGA and Junior competitions. We’ve managed to re-arrange the Stella Watson for the junior girls, which will now take place on 20 August at Reddish Vale, and the Girls Championship, which is still being held at Helsby but now on 4 October. Both these competitions will also include a 9 hole competition. Andrew Delany is the contact person for these, email: cclgajuniorcomps@gmail.com, Tel 01625 262972, Mobile 07811 798621.

There are still places available for the Stableford Foursomes at Delamere GC on 9 September, and the Quad Am at Vicars Cross on 18 September. Contact Jean Payne, Tel 01829 752384 or email cclgacompsecwest@hotmail.co.uk. I think there maybe the odd tee time available at Prestbury for the Centenary Rose Bowl (Club Team of 3) on Thursday 27 August, contact Jane Davis, 01565 654671, email cclgacompseceast@gmail.com

Sadly, I have now had confirmation from England Golf that the County Finals Match Week, scheduled for 14-17 September at Spalding GC, has been cancelled. With current restrictions in place around social distancing, gathering indoors, the team nature of the event and the uncertainty around possible future localised lockdowns, EG felt, for the safety and best interests of all concerned, that the event should no longer take place.

We are still continuing with Zoom for our Board meetings and sub-committee meetings, and I’m afraid that, in view of the current situation with COVID 19, it is unlikely that the physical AGM at Vale Royal on Monday 23 November will go ahead.  We are looking into holding a Zoom AGM, and our wonderful secretary, Jill Sanders, is now beavering away in the background to see if this is viable, and will inform delegates whether/how this will happen nearer the time.  What a strange world we’re living in at the moment – if it has to be a Zoom AGM we will all miss our social gathering on that day.
