Get Into Golf

Karen Harrison

Karen Harrison, a member at Ringway Golf Club, has set a great example of what can be achieved by newcomers to the sport. She saw an advert encouraging women to “Get into Golf” and started having lessons at Ringway. She started playing two and half years ago, got her handicap two years ago and has seen a terrific fall in her handicap from her original 42 to 28 last year, and now down to 18 this year, with her highlight in 2020 seeing her get a remarkable two holes in one in competitions at her club. What better advert could you have for Get into Golf!

Karen has won a lot of competitions as her handicap has reduced, but says it still mystifies/amuses her that because of the handicap system the best golfer does not generally win – rather it is the person who plays better than their handicap!!!! Her proudest moment has been seeing her name on the honours board when she won Ringway’s handicap trophy last year which is awarded to the lady who returns the best four nett scores in the season.

Karen continues to have lessons to improve her golf and practices regularly. She aims to lower her handicap even further and to focus on those parts of her game that she feels let her down – so her plan over the winter is to work on her irons, and concentrate on getting out of bunkers first time! Wouldn’t we all love to do that!

Her most favourite moment has been getting the two holes in one this year, both on the same 16th hole, and both in competitions. She’s now taken out golf insurance!!

The whole experience of taking up golf has, for Karen, been both rewarding and enjoyable, so much so that her son and husband are now having lessons. The ladies at Ringway have been both welcoming and encouraging (even though they’re probably getting fed up with her winning so much!). Karen has made a great many new supportive friends, and would encourage anybody to take up golf.

GET INTO GOLF is for everybody. Fellow golfers, get out there and encourage friends and relatives to try out this wonderful game of golf.
