Launch of the Northern Junior Golf Tour in Cheshire,

A popular competition for young golfers is launching in Cheshire.

The Northern Junior Golf Tour – which was established in 2009 and has involved more than 5,000 players across the north – is expanding in 2022.

Five new events will be played in Cheshire this year.

More than 450 youngsters took part last year and organisers hope to top 500 as the Tour – in association with PING – brings its beginner-friendly competition to Cheshire.

The Rookies Tour is played over nine holes and is open to players up to the age of 14.

Prizes are available at each event for the best nett and gross scores, while the top finishers in the Tour’s Order of Merit qualify for a Grand Final at Ramside Hall Golf Club on August 31.

Founder and tournament organiser Jason Budd said: “We launched the Tour in 2009 to provide fun and competitive opportunities for young golfers to get involved in the sport, make new friends and play on different courses. They are open to everyone from newcomers to the sport or the more experienced junior player with a low handicap.

“Our events are professionally organised with, for example, a live leaderboard and support from PING making it a great day out for all involved.”

The Cheshire Rookies Tour will be played at Macclesfield (May 8), Eastham Lodge (May 27), Aldersey Green (June 26), Romiley (July 17) and Helsby (July 31).

Events cost £15, with every entrant receiving a free PING cap.

The NJGT also runs a Masters Tour aimed at under-18s with a recognised golf handicap, which also features individual prizes and culminates in the Grand Final at Ramside Hall in August. The Masters Tour involves 11 events across six counties, starting on April 22 at Brancepeth Castle, and is open to players from across the country.

Other events are: Longhirst (May 15), Silloth-on-Solway (May 28), Dunstanburgh Castle (June 12), Heworth (June 19), Hurlston Hall (July 10), Seaton Carew (August 1), Lancaster (August 4), Preston (August 8), Richmond, Yorkshire (August 19), and Bishop Auckland (August 24).
