John and Jill drive into office in style

Heaton Moor Golf Club has had several husband and wife combinations in recent years as Captain and Lady Captain in the same year.

This year the roles will be filled by John and Jill Howarth who have been members of their beloved club for a total of 47 years, John for 26 years.

A tradition of the club is for new officials to arrive at the first tee for the Captains drive in in a varied and sometimes spectacular mode of transport. Amongst the vehicles used in the past are a helicopter, a horse drawn carriage and a £250,000 Lamborghini. John and Jill (pictured below with Junior Captain Jack) chose to arrive in one of the club’s new double buggies with President Kevin Wilson and Junior Captain Jack Benson following in a second one. The new vehicles will enable more members and visitors to play the Heaton Moor course.

John said ‘We may not have the best laid out course but we offer friendship, fun and the chance to integrate into the club. We have large ladies and junior sections.

‘The charities we will be supporting during our year are Vista for Lady Captain Jill. I played football with Matt Vista and the charity helps people who are going blind or need of accommodation since they cannot manage at home.

‘The CEO of Vista gives her time for free and has known Jill since they were both six.

‘My Captain’s Charity is Francis House because they do a great job with children and parents of children who are terminally ill.’
