Ringway’s Fabulous Four

For a Cheshire Club to have had a former Cheshire President who is also still an active club member is a rare feat in the county.

Ringway Golf Club are sure that they have set a club, county and national record by currently having four former Cheshire Presidents enjoying regular golf at their club and still being involved in golf life on and off the course.

Ringway are justifiably proud of the contributions to golf given by Steven Buckley, Roger Fielding, Ron Harrison and Martyn Grimley over many years.

Steven Buckley was the first to be Cheshire President in 2002 and he now plays off 16 handicap and during his year in office he was proud to see junior stars Paul Waring and Mark Pilling (British Boys Champion) go on to shine in the professional ranks, playing and coaching.

His first job on joining the CUGC was looking after the B team which he did for several years before becoming Chairman of Selectors of the County team,

After his Presidency with Cheshire he joined the EGU and later became the Chairman of Handicapping and Course Assessment Committee for five years.

Next up in 2011 was Roger Fielding, now playing off 18 handicap.

Roger began his golf at Ringway in 1972 and joined their Council in 1988 and 2003.

He joined the County Executive in 2006 with a particular interest in promoting Senior County Golf.

Roger managed the CUGC team which won the England Golf Senior Men’s final in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

He was elected as the CUGC President in 2011 and appointed as Chairman of the EGU Counties Group for three years,

Next up is Ron Harrison – the self-confessed ‘Best Looking Senior in England Golf’.

Ron’s current handicap is three and he must have played for half a century at under four handicap.

Ron joined the Cheshire Executive in 2002 and was Chairman of Selectors for three years, County Captain for three years, Chairman of Seniors for three years

County President in 2013, Immediate Past County President for three years and on the England Golf Board for three years.

He also found time to win over 100 caps playing for Cheshire Seniors.

The final star is Martyn Grimley, currently playing off one handicap, and a former British field hockey player who won gold in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

His other hockey successes are winning World Cup and Champions silver medals with England as well as silver medals in the Indoor and outdoor England squads and he had a combined total of 178 international caps for England and Great Britain and is a life member at Brooklands Hockey Club.

He enjoyed his golf at Ringway and developed his skills to get down to +1 handicap and In 2018 he became the Cheshire Seniors Stroke-play champion at Bromborough GC.

Martyn also won the Cheshire Seniors Match-play Championship in 2019.

Martyn was Cheshire President in 2022- a difficult time in Covid.

There is more to come from Ringway….Marjorie Griffiths will become Cheshire Golf President in 2026.
