Lucy is English Women’s Champion

Lucy Jamieson of Heswall GC has won the English Women’s Amateur Championship at Royal Liverpool

100 years after the inaugural English Men’s Amateur Championship was held at Royal Liverpool, the event and the Women’s Championship returned to Hoylake and Wallasey. Cheshire provided the winner, Thomas Froes Ellison of the host club, in that first men’s championship and no less than 25 players from Cheshire teed it up this year as they aimed for championship success.

The strokeplay qualifying took place at Wallasey and Royal Liverpool, and the scoring was tremendous on courses that were in immaculate condition. Ringway’s Cole Self fired a 64 at Wallasey but that was 2 behind the leader who shot a 10 under 62!

Nine Cheshire players progressed to the matchplay stages over both championships. Emily McBurney (Royal Liverpool), Lucy Jamieson (Heswall) and Imogen Williamson (Delamere Forest) were our three ladies to progress. The men were Jake Hibbert (Warrington), Spencer Davies (Wallasey), Cole Self (Ringway), Paul McFerran (Warrington), Cheshire champion Sam Johnson (Astbury) and Josh McMahon (Wallasey).

Reaching the quarter finals were Jake Hibbert (Warrington), Lucy Jamieson and Emily McBurney. Jake, who won the Cheshire Men’s Championship over the Hoylake links in 2024, had a very tight match but lost on the 18th. Emily McBurney came back from 4 down but also lost on the final hole. Lucy, however, had a comfortable win and did so again in the afternoon to book her place in the final.

Finals day dawned very wet but despite this a good sized crowd turned up to cheer on the local favourite who took on Grace Bowen of Droitwich in the 36-hole final. Lucy, with caddie Simon Coombes (pictured at top of report) won the first but the match remained very close, with Lucy going into lunch 1 up. She then lost the first three after the break but dug deep to quickly bounce back to all square. Gradually Lucy pulled away from Bowen and closed out the match on the 17th to secure a 3&1 victory.

Lucy became Cheshire’s first winner of the championship since Bramhall’s Bronte Law.

In the Men’s championship, Henry Styles (Romford) beat Max Hopkins of Bishop Stortford 5&4.

It was a tremendous honour for Cheshire clubs Royal Liverpool and Wallasey to host these championships. They presented immaculate courses and delivered impeccable organisation for what was a huge field of players plus the many caddies, supporters and organisers. To have a Cheshire winner really was the icing on the cake. Congratulations to Lucy, Heswall GC and all of the Cheshire players who competed so well in a week to remember for Cheshire Golf
