Camaraderie, friendly competition and inter-club banter are always evident at our Life Member competitions, the 2023 season having concluded on Thursday at Chester.
Life Membership was introduced in 1965, and initially we had just two competitions a year. Now we have seven, taking us to all corners of the county. This year we started at Bidston, then Helsby, Stamford, Eaton, Disley, Heaton Moor and finally Chester. The competitions are extremely popular, with anything from 150 to 190 players at each event, playing in betterball stableford format.
Our mini tour takes us to some clubs that many “Lifers” haven’t been to previously, such as Stamford. In fact, we don’t believe that the county have held any events there. Many people think it’s in Lancashire, and it nearly is; the county boundary is just 100 yards from the club entrance. The welcome we received at Stamford in June was second-to-none, with staff and volunteers looking after us superbly. It must also be said they served up the best bacon butties of the season! But we receive this level of welcome at every club we visit, which makes the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable for everyone who takes part.
Our season finale at Chester followed several days of very wet weather. Hats off to the Chester greens staff who managed to present a course that was very playable and resulted in a winning score of 46 points from Martin Guest and John Cummins (Helsby).
