Congratulations Emily

ROYAL Liverpool GC, the hosts for this year’s Open Championship provided a magnificent stage enjoyed by all of the competitors for the Cheshire County Ladies Championships played over three days of excellent weather.

The first day saw a 36-hole scratch medal decide the players in the match-play round and the best gross score of 154 came from 14-year-old one handicapper Sophie Clafton (Wallasey GC) finishing ahead of Cath Rawthore (Sale) 157 and Isabella Taylor-Stokes (Styal) 159.

The best net of 152 was won by Louise McLoughlin (Heswall) after a cpo with Sophie Clafton

The top 16 players then played round three and the quarter-final the following day to make it through to the semi-finals and going though were Sophie Clafton, Caroline Berry (Bromborough) and Cath Rawthore and Emily McBurney (Royal Liverpool)

The eight players beaten in round three then competed for the Sir William Bailey Cup and making it through to the last four were Milly Tighe (Ringway), Morgan Bollam (Crewe, Wad Grayson (Ringway) and Sue Oldham (Sale).

So on to finals day and the morning semi-finals had Caroline Berry and Emily McBurney going through to the Championship final and it was an all-Ringway final in the Bailey Cup between Wad Grayson and Milly Tighe.

The Bailey final saw Wad Grayon’s steady game eased her through to a comfortable victory and local star Emily McBurney cruised through against Caroline Berry.

The presentation of the trophies and prizes was done in the historic Royal Liverpool club house by Cheshire President Pam Draper (Chorlton) and Cheshire Captain Helen Heggarty (Royal Liverpool).

Helen gave deserving thanks to all of the players, county officials and volunteers for their great efforts in a busy three days and to all at Royal Liverpool GC for their great help and support before and during a memorable championship.

Emily McBurney added the Intermediate Champion and Millenium Trophy to her Championship Trophy and Caroline Berry won the Gladys Dobell Cup as runner-up.

Wad Grayson was a proud winner of the Sir William Bailey Cup.

Also winning trophies were Sophie Clafton  the Doris Brown Trophy as the leading qualifier and Cath Rawthore the Christian Jones Salver as the top senior qualifier.
