David delighted with Junior Organiser Award

Wallasey Golf Club’s David Robinson was delighted to win the 2025 Cheshire Junior Organiser of the Year award at the Cheshire Dinner.

David outlines his time in golf and hopefully it will give some advice and help to other junior organisers in Cheshire.

David said: “I have been playing golf for approximately 30 years firstly at Hooton Municipal then Eastham Lodge before joining Wallasey in 2008. I joined the Junior Organiser group in 2012 and became Lead Junior Organiser in 2016.

“The biggest highlight from my time as Junior Organiser is the satisfaction of seeing Junior Golfers develop as people not just golfers.

“Our Junior Section has grown from 18 in 2015 to 60 today with the number of girls going from three who occasionally played to an active eight participating in Competitions and matches. We have had some team success and also individuals representing the County, Regional and National squads. “My thanks go to my Predecessor Paul Corvers who was Junior Organiser for 13 years and was quite rightly rewarded with the Captaincy of Wallasey in 2016.

“We have a Junior Committee of six with Abi Middlehurst, (England Golf Volunteer of the Year for 2024) looking after our girls and co-ordinating our ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ programme.

“Ben Keegan has now taken over as Lead Junior Organiser at Wallasey and he is doing a great job in the continuing development of our section.

“The Management Team, Council and Catering staff have also given me huge support over the years and I must also give a huge thanks also go to my family, Anne my wife for her continued support despite numerous missed Sunday lunches and my son Adam who is also a member at Wallasey and ex-Junior Captain. “My advice to other Junior Organisers is to have a Junior Committee to run things by, the role if done correctly in my opinion requires several people if it is going to be successful.

“Communication with parents is also key to both cascade information and also to manage expectations, not all parents are Golfers and Golf Terminology can be confusing.

“Successes in Junior Golf can be measured in both Team and Individual success for our Juniors but also satisfaction from their individual development.

“It was a very pleasant surprise to win the Cheshire Junior Organiser of the Year award, I have a good relationship with Graham McCormack Cheshire U14 Team Manager a man I respect greatly so to be nominated by him was an honour in itself.”

Graham McCormack added: “Having known Dave for almost 10 years I was delighted that he was chosen for 2025, he’s like a stick of Blackpool rock, in his case it reads: ‘Junior Golf Year-on-Year he’s supported me and the county, playing an annual match against his juniors.

“Next year I’ll have five Wallasey juniors in my U14s squad, testament to Wallasey’s junior support policy and the junior management team. I task my squad to enter Wallasey’s Junior Open every year and when I can, I go there to support Dave and the event, looking also for potential players.”
