The Cheshire Men’s Match play was reduced to just match-play with a small but quality field in action.
Cheshire Deputy President Stewart Neil reported: “The competition was played over two days and day one saw the field reduced to the last four after two rounds of match-play.
“Going through to the semi-finals were Jon Beesley (Vale Royal Abbey) who had a close one-up win over Nathan Hopley (Bramall Park) and Sam Prince (Ringway) who had a more comfortable 4/3 win over Tom Johnson (The Wilmslow GC).
“The final between two of Cheshire’s top team players was a fantastic contest with some great golf from both of them.
“If we ignore the tenth hole where they both had bogeys in the rest of the round there were multiple birdies and Sam just edged victory with four consecutive threes from the 13th including an outrageous 70 foot birdie on the 14th to help him through to a 3/2 win.
“Jon played some great golf but could not stop Sam achieving an historic third win on the trot which has never been done before.
“We owe thanks to so many people who contributed to making this a tremendous tournament- to Prenton Golf Club and their members for hosting us (to Beth, Craig and his green staff, the bar and catering staff, spotters and helpers.
“Also to all of the Cheshire people involved- Bob, Steve, Phil and his referees and to the players whose standard of golf was befitting the premier county match-play championship.
“And finally congratulations again to Sam on a well-merited victory.”
