Ringway GC and Cheshire star Cole Self had a big national win in 2025 when he Captained Cheshire Boys to victory in three top team events including the English County Boys Championships.
Cole played in the prestigious Berkshire Trophy last week where he had an excellent four rounds to finish runner-up. He then went on to Moortown to compete in the English Men’s Open Amateur Championship, for the Brabazon Trophy. In this he finished a very creditable tied 12th. But he took Philip Scrutton Jug which is for the best combined aggregate scores across the Brabazon Trophy and the Berkshire Trophy, previous winners of which include Michael Bonallack, Sir Nick Faldo and Sandy Lyle.
We believe he is the first Cheshire player to win this prestigious trophy.
Philip Scrutton was a top amateur golfer who played in the Walker Cup and won the Brabazon and Berkshire Trophies in the same year.
He was tragically killed in a road traffic accident at the age of 35 and his widow donated the Philip Scrutton Jug which was first played for in 1959
Cole, who has previously played for England Under-16s, is firmly in the sights of the England selectors and will be part of the England Golf contingent who will travel to Berlin to compete in the German Boys Championship.
A busy schedule of golf lies ahead for Cole this summer.
