The CUGC men’s team warmed up for the new season in an excellent match at Sandiway against some of their former Cheshire legends such as Rhys Nevin-Wharton, Ashley Sage and Chris Harrison plus former European Tour star Matthew Nixon and Sandiway club stars.

Cheshire led by skipper Jon Beesley (The Mere Resort) were a combination of team regulars plus a few newcomers and top junior stars Dan Hayes (Bramhall) and Cole Self (Ringway)

It was nip and tuck in the morning foursomes which ended at 3-3 with the Cheshire points secured by Dom O’Brien and Ollie Claireaux, Jon Beesley and Chris Chilton and Sam Prince and Paul McFerran.

Sandiway began the singles in ominous style as they took the lead with wins for Rhys Nevin-Wharton and Andy Clark with a half for Cameron Cross against Ben Knock.

Ollie Claireaux pulled a point back for Cheshire before Tom Harper regained the Sandiway lead with a 2/1 win over James McCormick (Disley).

But then Cheshire showed their power and intent by winning the last seven games for a morale-boosting 11.5 to 6.5 victory for their opening Northern Counties League fixture v Durham at Warrington on May 14.

Winning for Cheshire were John Kendal, Cole Self, Dan Hayes, Jon Beesley, Chris Chilton, Sam Prince and Paul McFerran.
