Congratulations Jo

JOANNE Morley is a true golfing legend with Sale Golf Club, England, GB and I, Europe, the LET and LPGA since she began her life in golf some 42 years ago.

Joanne started her golfing life at ‘Royal Altrincham’ GC in November 1980 and carried it on at Sale GC where she has maintained close contact with the club and members over the years.

In both her amateur and professional careers she played to a level that most golfers can only dream about.

She was made an Honorary Life Member in 1992 in recognition of her successes.

Now Joanne is delighted to be appointed as the Sale GC President for the next year, the second lady in the club to take on this role.

Joanne, reflecting o n her appointment said: “Well, it’s an Honour! – something I never thought would be bestowed upon me.

“Having been a member for 42 years (coming from Royal Altrincham GC) and represented Sale Golf Club on a worldwide stage to the best of my ability, I will continue do so in my year of office.

“I would like to thank my Mum and family, for all she gave and taught me throughout my learning years which will hold me in good stead for my year in office. Plus all the members who have supported me by coming to tournaments creating lasting memories not only for myself but for them as well. We did have lots of fun and some ups and downs along the way.

“In my year as President I would love to keep the golf club going forward in many ways but most importantly for me – having had my name attached to a junior competition for over 20 years – is to try and create a lasting legacy for the juniors and watch them progress through the ranks.

“I believe sport teaches youngsters so much:- manners, etiquette, rules, friendship, being competitive but above all values which you take forward into your future years.”

Sale GC long-serving member Peter Bradford added: “I have known Jo for many years- she has always been Jo!

“”She has no pretentions, funny, warm and I know that she will be a great ambassador for Sale Golf Club as our Club President.

”For the past 20 years she has supported the Junior Challenge for both boys and girls played at Sale in her name and many of the juniors taking part from Sale and other clubs in the region have won and gone on to become really excellent players and fine young people.”

Joanne drove into office at the Captain’s Drive in immaculate style with Captain David Owens, Lady Captain Christine Johnston and Junior Captain Will Hobson.

Her list of some of her amateur and professional successes includes: 1989-93, Leading amateur at Women’s British Open, 1991-92 English Stroke Play Champion, 1992 Curtis Cup (GB and I winners at Royal Liverpool over the USA, 1992 British Ladies Amateur runner-up, 1992 World Team Champions (played in (Canada), 1992 European Stroke Play champion, 1993 turned professional, 1996 German Open winner, 1996 played in Solheim Cup under Captain Mickey Walker, 2000 German Open winner, 2009 Solheim Cup Assistant Captain to Alison Nicholas, 2011 Solheim Cup Assistant Captain to Alison Nicholas.
