Super Seniors win inaugural Phil Jones Trophy

In 2023 when the Super Seniors played North Wales, Karl Lurz, the North Wales Seniors’ Captain suggested that an annual trophy be played for in memory of the late Phil Jones.

The inaugural event was at Eaton Golf Club, Chester on 15th May 2024.

The match was won by Cheshire 8-4, the overall result did not reflect the closeness of some games.

The trophy was presented by Mike Bryant, (President, North Wales Counties Golf Association) to Roy Claxton, (President, Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs).

The trophy, provided by Paul Dalby, featured fine engraved artwork of the logos of the two organisations. Team players contributed to the cost of the trophy.

JP (Phil) Jones came from a distinguished golfing family, his father, JT Jones was three-time Cheshire Champion and British Seniors Champion in1973. See https://www.cheshire-golf100.org.uk/jones.php. Brother Kevin was professional at Caldy.

Phil won 121 caps for Cheshire and a further 85 Seniors caps. He was men’s county champion in 1987, four-time Welsh Seniors champion, Irish Seniors champion in 2003 and Northern Seniors champion in 2006. He captained the Wales Seniors team for the Home Internationals and retained strong links with North Wales.

Eaton proved to be a great venue, avoiding the threatening rain, and a fine meal was enjoyed by all.
