The Ladies at Didsbury Golf Club had a wonderful celebration when they met for lunch with their centenarian member Shirley Leak.
Didsbury Lady Captain Margaret Lloyd said: “Until a couple of years ago Shirley was still playing a few holes at the club.
“Her 100th birthday was last November but she was still recovering from an operation for a new hip at that time so the celebration was delayed.
“As always Shirley was in good form and entertained the ladies by using the words- horse, gun and secret to recall events she experienced at the club. Always a good joke teller Shirley was on form with an amusing joke.
“She is an example to us all and well loved and respected.”
As well as golf Shirley has enjoyed other sporting successes and many other worthwhile activities and is a great example to younger players at the club.
As well as being a play therapist and social worker she was a keen writer for many years including a drama for the BBC.
She also had a short but outstanding career as a triathlete back in the 1990’s.
She took on the sport for fun with a half-length triathalon and then went on to win the national championship in the 70-74 age group.
Shirley then joined the British team competing in the World Triathalon championships in Cancun, Mexico. She came second in her age group winning a silver medal for the British team.
Shirley was also a very keen bridge player and worked as a volunteer in the Lowry theatre and still found time to play for the Didsbury’s ladies teams with some success.
