Boys team ready for action at Formby

Our Boys team are in action next week (10th and 11th April) in the annual renewal of the prestigious Four Counties Junior Tournament. This event, inaugurated in 1973, features Cheshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Shropshire & Herefordshire.

Lancashire take their turn to host this year, and the selection of the wonderful links at Formby will prove to be a great test for all competitors. It is also fortunate that a links course has been selected, given that most inland course would struggle to host such an event after the incessant rainfall we’ve experienced for months.

Cheshire have a very strong team, comprising:

Harry Kell (Sandiway)
Lucas Kuiper (Stockport)
Oscar Craig (Sandiway)
Ben Buchanan (Dunham Forest)
Aaron Mohun (Delamere Forest)
Laurent Beech (Eaton)
Cole Self (Ringway)
Spencer Davies (Wallasey)

Cole Self and Lucas Kuiper have already established themselves in the county men’s team, and others are looking equally promising. After a fantastic season in 2023, winning the inaugural Northern Counties Boys League and going unbeaten for the season, our boys will be keen to get off to a strong start this year.

The Four Counties Tournament was formed in 1973 largely through the efforts of former CUGC President Frank Boote (Crewe GC). The inaugural event was held at Crewe and those present would not have imagined that two of the Shropshire and Herefordshire players would go on to become major champions and giants of the game: Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam.

The format is team round-robin matchplay over two days. Cheshire have won the tournament 15 times.

If you are interested in seeing up-and-coming talent on a magnificent course, then do head over to Formby where spectators will be very welcome.
