Scott takes the helm at Disley

Scott Newton (pictured) has made a quick and very impressive start to his new role as Head Greenkeeper at Disley Golf Club and has received great praise from club members and visitors for the impact he has had on their scenic course in just a few weeks.

Scott brings a wide range of experience to his role as he outlined his career from its beginning to now.

“I began at Astbury GC in 2002. I was there 11 years finishing as head green keeper and was successful in winning the young turf professional of the year in 2012.

“I then moved to Greenway Hall GC, in Staffordshire, as Head Greenkeeper and with a lot of dedication we made this one of the most enjoyable golf courses to play in Staffordshire.

“My next move was to Mottram Hall as golf course and estates manager. My highlight here was hosting the DP world tour Q school

“We were the base camp for the England u21’s using our pitch/golf course and facilities to go all the way and win the competition.

“I then moved a couple of months ago to Disley GC. I am very proud to have worked with some great green keeper teams over the years and in that time five former members of my staff have gone on to become head green keepers at other courses.

“I got into the turf industry whilst doing my work experience from school at Old Trafford where I then got a matchday job and found this very interesting.

“My pathway has taken me on a journey from football to private schools to golf, the knowledge I have picked up along the way has been instrumental and I would like to thank Keith Kent (former Man United and Twickenham head groundsman) for starting my career pathway.

“Disley have welcomed me with arms wide open and the whole place has a family friendly atmosphere

“The hospitality is second to none hosting anything from comedy nights and weddings to our famous local resident Edwina Currie’s business club.

“Coming up I face new challenges such as drainage /path work re shaping fairways, bunkers work and hopefully this winter we can prioritise such works working alongside the budget that is in place.

“I really hope to make some great changes to this golf club and take it up a few divisions and back to where this club belongs.

“It’s going to be a a huge team effort but I know with the backing of the board this can be one of the best courses in the area and I’m excited with the challenges ahead!”
