Philip takes Disley helm

Disley Golf Club’s new Captain Philip Clarke is looking forward to his upcoming year in the role with plenty of exciting developments up and coming at Disley GC.

Philip said: “I’ve been a member of Disley for approximately six years but played with friends there prior to joining.

“My current handicap is 13 .9 (my lowest ever) – I’ve tried hard this year to get it down from higher teens as I didn’t want to be a duffer captain!

“My favourite golf club other than Disley is Porthmadog where I used to be a member which was lovely on a calm morning on the peninsula.

“My favourite hole at Disley is the 17th with stunning views and is a great challenge!

“I try to play at least twice a week, three if I’m lucky but I’m still working!

“ My other hobby is (or I should say was at the moment) is carp fishing and I’m very lucky to be part of a private syndicate lake on the Capesthorne Hall Estate through Alderley Edge.

“My football team is Manchester City I can’t complain even though it’s not our best in recent years, but I’m not a bitter blue. !

“My chosen charity, having recently lost both my brothers from various ailments I could have picked many charities, but when I was at a recent meeting with the ladies section they told me that their choice was going to be the Kinder Scout Mountain Rescue which was close to Lady Captain, Linda McCay – so i said that will be mine also.

“It then brings more inclusion with the men and ladies as we only have a small ladies section at the moment which we are hoping to increase this year, and I’m all up for a bit rivalry for a good cause!

“ My personal golfing highlight is a funny one ,a couple of years ago we ended up having a chip off competition from near the pro shop on to 18th green on our Josh Crumplin Pro day and the demo ball was about eight feet from the hole

“I hit a lovely ball that bounced onto the green, rolled into demo ball, making my ball go towards the hole to within two feet, with rapturous laughter from the gallery on the balcony winning me a £500 jewellery voucher!

“My favourite fourball to play in would be Ronnie Corbett, Dave Allen and Sean Connery, as you may have gathered I like and can tell a story!

“Finally Disley is such a friendly club with aspirations to do it’s best in all departments. We are making great improvements with our new green keeping team and greens committee, we have not had a single winter green this year which is fantastic, in the clubhouse our food and beverages team are excelling year on year with great food and our function room is doing really well withn parties and weddings etc. and our admissions for the start of year has been really positive onwards and upwards.
