Cath Rawthore wins nail-biting Senior Ladies Championship

Sandiway Golf Club were superb hosts for the 2025 Cheshire Senior Women’s Championship over three days with a magnificent course, fantastic weather and great support both on and off the course from Sandiway staff and members.

The competition began with a qualifying medal round followed by four rounds of match-play over the following two days.

A top class field of thirty three competitors, including Cheshire and England players, played the qualifying medal round with 16 progressing to four rounds of match-play.

Cheshire Senior Ladies Captain Jane Burke said: “The weather was glorious and we were treated to some amazing golf across the three days, including a hole-in-one for Sara Spencer, culminating in an exciting final between Catherine Rawthore, Sale GC, and Sarah Naden, The Wilmslow GC, with Catherine winning a nerve-jangling thriller on the 19th hole.

“Our congratulations to Catherine and Sarah, championship winner and runner up. We also applaud Barbara Laird for the Best Gross in the qualifying round and winner of the Veteran Trophy (best Gross 65 and over) and Christina Hornsby, winner of the best qualifying nett score.

“I should like to thank the Sandiway team for hosting the event and looking after us so well; Cheshire’s, Fiona Walton and Sue Hughes our tournament directors; our Captains and members who helped on the course, and all the many supporters who came out to watch the final.”

Results-The Challenge Cup presented to Cheshire by Mrs G E O George, CHAMPION Catherine Rawthore, Sale GC who won on the 19th hole.

Runner Up Sarah Naden, The Wilmslow GC.
