Welcome to a new series of news items at Cheshire Golf ‘In Conversation with…’. Each month we will introduce you to one of our Cheshire Golf Team.
Cleveland McCurdy chaired the Unification team that saw the creation of Cheshire Golf on the 23rd September 2024. Post county unification Cleveland was appointed Chair of Cheshire Golf Limited (CGL).
When did you start to play golf and where?
I took up golf in my 60th year and started hacking my way around Altrincham Golf Club.
Current handicap?
My Handicap is currently 16.5
Home Golf Club?
I am a member of Ringway GC and was briefly a member at Sale GC beforehand.
How often do you play golf?
The past year following unification has not afforded me much time for golf and my average has been about once per week. This season I am hoping to play at least twice per week.
Do you have any must do golf rituals/superstitions?
Not Really. My balls are all marked with a red cross and three green dots that look like a shamrock.
What is your favourite golf club in your bag?
My lob wedge.
What is your favourite golf ball?
Titleist Pro V1.
Do you have any funny/embarrassing golf stories you can share?
My eyesight is so bad that I generally can’t follow my ball. Generally known as “where did that go McCurdy”
What is your ‘go to’ on course snack?
Banana and fruit bars.
What is the best golf tip you’ve been given?
Practice short putts above anything else.
Can you recommend a must play golf course in Cheshire and anywhere in the world?
Royal Cromer in Norfolk.
What would be your choice of an Imaginary 4ball (if you could play golf with any three individuals)?
Tiger Woods, Leslie Thompson and Charlie Hull.
What would you say to anyone thinking of taking up golf but is not sure about it?
Golf is not just about a walk spoilt by hitting a little white ball. Golf teaches one about life in all its multifaceted faces. I did not take up golf until my 60th year because of the barrier and perceived barriers to the game for people of colour. Participation early on tested one’s resolve not only with getting to grips with the sport but also with the negative and unsupportive comments. Golf teaches you resilience because once you get hooked to the challenge, no amount of external negativity can deter you from your own goals.
What are your hopes for the future of golf in Cheshire?
To see much more equality and inclusion within the county.
