Ex Cheshire President takes the helm at Wilmslow


Wilmslow Golf Club’s new Captain Andrew Henshall is delighted with his new role and he is looking forward to plenty of new challenges in 2025.
Andrew has been a member of his club for 54 years and has also enjoyed several years on the Cheshire GA committee where he was the County President in 2019.
Andrew outlined a new club development in which he will be involved: “Wilmslow has just started down the governance route and the process of changing to a Board of Directors to manage the club.
“This year I will be the first Captain to be responsible for only the golfing matters, which should make my life easier!
“We now have a Chair who started in office at the same time of me in mid December and he will look after the staff as well as the responsibility for greens and house-it should be a great year.”
He then outlined his time in golf which began 54 years ago: “I live near the club in Chorley and I retired about 18 months ago from working in property and wholesale stationery and greeting cards, having started life as an accountant.
“My current handicap is 16.2 and my best was ten- never made single figures!
“I don’t have a favourite hole at the club as there are 18 good holes and I have never tired of any of them. I have had lots of eagles on the par fours and fives but never a hole in one.
“My other favourite course is Brocket Hall because of their 18th.
“I usually play three times a week and a bit more in the summer. I played 128 times in 2024 despite being injured throughout January and most of July as well as being away throughout February and several other times during the year.
“My hobbies other than golf are watching Man City home and away as well as helping with the Cheshire Boys teams and of course the football team I support is the only one to come from Manchester!
“My chosen Captain’s Charity is Diabetes UK as I have just completed 50 years as a Type 1 Diabetic.
“My own personal golfing highlights include getting my name on more club honours boards than my dad although he was a good golfer and played off four or five handicap for most of his golfing career.
“I often got lucky on the big days and would always putt well which is a big help when you have a high handicap.
“Also winning the Four Counties competition with the Cheshire Boys team in 2024, after watching Cheshire Boys come second or worse to the other counties in the last 15 years they won the Northern Counties League in my first year in charge and the Four Counties in my second year at the helm- so now hoping to win the Boys “Little Six” (Northern Counties Qualifying) this year to get a hat-trick of wins for Cheshire after such a long bleak spell.
“Finally my chosen players to join me in a four-ball would be- Pep of course – he must be a great man to know, Peter May who is probably my favourite current author and possibly Chris de Burgh the singer who wrote such wonderful lyrics to his songs.
“People who can use words fascinate me and those who use them to lead people on are probably even more interesting.”
