Incredible recovery from floods at Withington

Withington Golf Club is on the official River Mersey flood relief plain, under the control of the Environment Agency, and has had the course flooded several times in recent years.

But the devastating record floods on New Year’s Day were unprecedented and caused huge damage to the course and clubhouse.

But thanks to the great efforts by the club staff and many volunteers they now have the course with 18 holes, in excellent condition, back in play and the clubhouse, with some adjustments, back in full swing.

Former Lady Captain and now Lady Captain Elect Julie Webb said: ”The recovery of the club, first established in 1892, has been remarkable when you look at the flood pictures taken on New Years Day “The whole clubhouse, ground floor and cellars, was affected by filthy flood water with complete loss of all machinery and professional James Curtis’ high tech studio.

“Our current Board, led by John Goddard, and Club Secretary / Manager James Dunn have worked wonders to get the clubhouse opened and the course playable. “There was a fantastic turnout of members in working parties to ensure that the massive amount of debris deposited on the course was collected and removed, along with the removal of silt built up on greens and in bunkers.

“Members turned out on several occasions with gloves, rakes, spades etc and then enjoyed a chat afterwards over drinks and bacon butties.

“It was a very impressive turnout of members doing their best to aid the recovery – a demonstration of how we all feel about our friendly and fabulous club. “There is still a lot to do but great progress is being made every day on the course by our Grounds team.

An incredible transformation

“The pro-shop is open again with James Curtis and his team providing golf expertise and Warren Burns along with his team keeping us all going with his superb catering, it’s always worth a lunchtime visit – there are lovely views from the clubhouse overlooking our rapidly recovering course.

“We are holding an Open Ladies Texas Scramble on April 10 and would welcome visitors to see the great work done.”

James Dunn added: “We would also like to thank Cheshire Golf and the other clubs who have given us support during this very difficult period.”
