Cheshire Men win 750th match

A milestone was reached on 16th August as our men’s team played their 750th match. This was a Northern Counties League fixture against Durham.

The day dawned cool but clear, and turned out to be a beautiful calm day on the magnificent links of Royal Liverpool GC which had recently hosted the English Amateur Championship.

At lunchtime there was a gathering of officials, supporters and past county players during which the Durham President kindly presented Cheshire President, John Heggarty, with an engraved glass momento to mark the occasion.

Cheshire took a commanding 4.5 to 1.5 lead into lunch and were straight onto the front foot in the afternoon. Sam Burton closed out his match on 12th green and Jon Beesley won 5&4. Durham won the next two games, but wins from Josh McMahon, Joe Sephton, Sam Prince, Chris Chilton and Josh Sims saw us secure an 11.5 – 6.5 success.

This match demonstrated county golf at its very best. Two determined teams who played hard but in a very friendly spirit.

The winning team

We thank Royal Liverpool for very kindly hosting this match and for their tremendous hospitality. The course was in magnificent condition, with the pins cut in the positions used for the final round of the Open.

Our next and final fixture of the season is against Lancashire on September 7th at Reddish Vale GC
