Sunny Styal puts on a great show of golfing talent

The Cheshire Boys U14 and U16 championships saw a top class field of over 50 players enjoy wonderful weather and a pristine and challenging course as they played for the U14 and U16 championship trophies.

First out Wilfred Simcock (Ringway GC) set the benchmark with a neat round of 71 which stayed on top of the leader board until the later groups came in.

Ricky Mohun took the lead with 69 which was later matched by George Bull (Disley GC).

Ricky won a play off on the last nine holes by 33 to 36 to take both the U16 and U14 trophies from George Bull.

This capped a wonderful 2 days for Ricky who shot a 7 under 66 at the Scottish U14 Championship played at Ferntower GC. Handicap now down to 1.2

The best net score came from Styal youngster Leo Hill who posted 89-29 = 60. He has now come down 7 shots in a few months. Testament to the team at Styal.

The presentation saw a good gathering of players, parents, friends and Styal members enjoying the presentation ceremony led by Cheshire President John Heggarty (Royal Liverpool GC).

John gave deserving thanks to Styal Golf Club staff and members, Cheshire officials and players and supporters for making this a special day showing the great junior talent there is in Cheshire.

John presented Mark Johnson (Styal and Cheshire coaching professional) with a county plaque to thank his club for their excellent hosting of the competition.

Double trophy winner Ricky Mohun also gave his thanks to all who had this a very special day for him and the other players. Ricky has continued the remarkable run of family success in this competition.

His elder brother Aaron won the U14 and U16 doubles in 2020 and 21 and Ricky was the U14 champions in 2024 and Aaron was delighted to be there to see his younger brother’s success.

Cheshire u14 manager Graham McCormack said: “This was a terrific day for Cheshire Boys golf with some outstanding golf on the course being supported by excellent off and on course etiquette at all times and great camerarderie between the players, an element in junior golf we are trying to develop in Cheshire.”
