New Disley Captain

Andy Roberts is looking forward to being the Captain of Disley Golf Club in the coming year.

It is his second stint at the club he first joined in1990 then had to leave to work in Africa in 1996 and he rejoined on his return in 2019;

Andy said: “The club opened in 1889 and it is an honour to be Captain of such an historic and great club and I am looking forward to the year ahead.

“My current handicap is 10.9 and my best was 6.8, three years ago, and I hope to get back into single figures although I think that there is a tendency of handicaps going up in captaincy.

“The main target is to get below President Simon Carter who has had a remarkable set of recent golf seasons.

“My favourite hole at Disley is the 16th – a regular card wrecker- a good solid strike off the tee should lead to a par but a poor tee shot leads to a world of pain, desolation and potentially a very big number, it is a great testing golf hole.

“The last few years I have been part of a group that plays in Seniors Opens at some fabulous courses and my favourite courses I have played at recently are Coxmoor, Sherwood Forest, St Annes Old Links and Ganton.

“I will try to play twice a week in the summer and apart from playing golf and working I enjoy volunteering with our work party on a Tuesday morning getting great craic and companionship.

“I also support Manchester City (a life sentence) and in the good old days I remember Joe Corrigan having the penalty spot repainted and Franny Lee being repeatedly tripped in the penalty area and losing to Stockport County – but have enjoyed more recent years as well! “My chosen Captain’s Charity begins at home where we are raising money to refurbish the gents toilets at the club as they are very poor at the moment- it will be a communal effort to raise funds, design and rebuild within the year and thanks already to everybody involved in this challenge.

“My own personal highlight would be representing Disley in the MDGA City Glass Foursomes partnering

my brother Gareth against Blackley and we won 9/8 to set the tone for a Disley home win.

“My ideal four-ball to play with would be President Carter- a fierce competitor but great fun, never a dull moment as something hysterical happens with him very round, Ian Hall old school mate. very funny and enthusiastic, he attacks life like he attacks a golf course and finally my son Dennis Roberts who has just started playing golf, now at University so a great way to spend time together.

“Joining Simon and I in office are two great Disley supporters Lady Captain Colette Corrigan and Junior Captain Charlie Singleton and we will form a great team.

Simon added: “Disley welcomes all golfers no matter what standard or wage bracket. Our members are hard working men and women who are grafters and make the most of their leisure time.

“The real levellers at Disley are the challenging greens and hard bouncy approaches. Its panoramic setting makes every round an event.

“We currently need more ladies in particular to join and enjoy golf seven days a week.

“I accepted the role of Captain because I wanted to give something back to a club that offers so much.”
