Boys storm back to win inaugural league title

Cheshire's boys win inaugural Northern Counties Boys league after battling draw with Yorkshire

CHESHIRE Boys have enjoyed a great season without defeat and they faced up to their toughest test taking on Yorkshire Boys at Delamere Forest Golf Club.
Both teams enjoyed excellent conditions on the superb Delamere course with fine, breezy weather.
The morning foursomes saw Yorkshire take a narrow 3-2 lead with Cheshire’s points coming from Harry Kell and Lucas Kuiper and Laurent Beech and Max Iveson both by 4&3.
It was nip and tuck throughout a tense afternoon of singles with the tone set by a halved match point coming from Spencer Davies.
Harry Kell went down 3&1 to see Yorkshire go into a two-point lead and this was extended as Cole Self went down 2&1.
The fight-back was led by Lucas Kuiper 6&5 but Ben Buchanan went down 5&4 to restore the White Rose advantage.
Then Cheshire moved up a gear with wins from Laurent Beech 3&2, Aaron Mohun 3&2 Aaron Lavelle7&6.
Nathan Hopley lost his match by one hole after a 4&3 win from Max Iveson had given Cheshire the lead.
It finished locked at 7.5-7.5 to preserve Cheshire’s unbeaten record and secure the league title in its inaugural year. A terrific season.

Andrew Henshall, boys team manager commented:

“A fantastic new league to take part in and a squad of players who have shown great desire to play for the County Boys Team. A season where they have all performed well in the dry, wet, warm and cold. Players who have all won drawn and just occasionally lost their individual matches. They have been exemplary at all times and the County are very lucky to have these boys  in the squad.

Having now won the inaugural league with what was a very young squad, most of them can play again next year. By the end of this weekend 3 of the squad will have played for the Men’s Team in Northern Counties League matches, which is great news for the County.

Our professional coaches, Peter Barber and John Heggarty, have been fantastic with the Boys throughout the winter coaching and supporting them at every match.”

The organisers Andrew Henshall, Jonathan Kell and Ian Self have enjoyed great support from the parents in all matches and are now busy planning for 2024.
