Amy ready for a bright year at Portal

Amy Lester is a relative newcomer to golf in Cheshire having moved up from the south of England to live in Tarporley nine years ago.

Amy worked in the NHS as an Occupational Therapist and joined Portal GC eight years ago and recently stopped work allowing her to play more golf and enjoy her other hobbies.

Her current handicap is 12.5 and her best was 12.

Amy said: “Portal is a great golf club. All sections are welcoming and inclusive.  It’s a challenging course (well actually two), and the ladies section is amazing being very friendly, helpful and social, but with a strong competitive spirit. Come along and you’ll see. Enjoy!

“As I only properly started golf since being here I have no particular favourite course at the moment and I am still exploring.

“I enjoy Wallasey, Delamere, played Royal Dornoch once, but anywhere hilly with friends or family is great. (Bude, Cornwall is where I grew up and I still love playing there).

“My favourite hole at Portal is the 15th… it’s a ‘drop off’ par 3. Great views and a challenge

“I now play three plus times a week and more if hubby Martin is away and the sun is shining!

“I also enjoy walking, climbing mountains and I used to play squash and sail dinghies with my Dad. Try to stay fit (ish), but enjoy wine too much!

“I don’t support a football team but hubby and daughter support Chelsea (sorry – from the South!)

“My chosen charity for the year is Age UK Cheshire. “When I was working they did great work for my patients helping support them when just home from hospital, sourcing care and doing wellness checks.

“They also provide befriending services and day centres for dementia sufferers, as well as fraud support/education and social trips.

“I am not sure about my own golfing highlight but I guess I’m very proud to be asked to be Lady Captain, and if I can help out our ladies, with tech, rules, or comps info, then that’s a nice pat on the back.

“I guess, feeling appreciated and valued, is the biggest compliment.  Maybe soon I’ll say ‘not embarrassing myself at the ‘Drive-in’ as an answer!

“My chosen partner to join me in a four-ball would be My Dad definitely. He’s getting on a bit now (but still playing), and when I was younger (about 10!) he made my sister and I learn the basics and dragged us out for six holes before breakfast. Not appreciated at the time, but in later life it served me well.

“My hubby Martin too, he puts up with a lot, and I basically made him learn golf about two years ago when he retired. Annoyingly, he often beats me now!

“The final person, maybe just Ed Sheeran… because well, you know…!
