Cole's great run in British Boys Championship
Cole Self reaches quarter final after heading qualifiers at Glasgow Gailes
After an excellent performance for England Boys in the Home Internationals at Monifieth, Cole Self (Ringway) headed over to the west coast of Scotland for the British Boys' Championship.
With an entry list that resembles the United Nations, this renewal of the Boys Championship was packed with quality players. 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying precedes the marathon matchplay stages and Cole turned in two excellent rounds of 68 and 66 (-8) to lead the qualifying. Dean Lenahan (Wilmslow) also qualified on level par.
Cole won his opening match 3&2 against a German competitor before despatching a Spanish boy 6&4. Another German fell 4&3 to Cole in the round of 16 where he had no less than seven birdies.Dean Lenahan went out in the first matchplay round but can be very proud of this effort considering it is his first experience at this level of competition.
The quarter finals saw Cole as the only British contender still standing. He faced Ludwig Libera of Sweden and a very close battle ensued. The match went to the 18th where Cole was edged out by the smallest margin. Libera went on to reach the final where he lost on the 37th.
This was a superb performance from our Cheshire players in a field packed with top quality players from around the globe. Cole in particular is establishing himself as a real star in the England and GB&I ranks. Look out for more from Cole, Dean and our other rising stars in Cheshire.
