15 year old Shane Clayton has burst onto the scene with two big wins

Fabulous season for Shane

Delamere Forest’s junior Cheshire star Shane Clayton has enjoyed a great season of success with his main highlights being only the second-ever junior to win both the u18 and U16 championships

The 15-year-old, who attends Great Sankey High School, has worked hard throughout his time in golf and is a great example to the upcoming generation of junior golfers in Cheshire.

Shane outlined his time in golf: “I started playing golf with my dad when I was six years old and I got my first and only one so far Hole In One at Poulton Park G.C on a par 3 (135 yards) with a Driver when I was seven years old.

“The first golf club I joined was Grange Park (St.Helens) aged eight and I started to play competition golf a year later to gain as much experience as I possibly could.

“My first win came aged 10 when I won Carus Green junior open in 2021 . I also made it to the finals of the Northern Junior Ping Tour at Ramside G.C and won my age group for Lancashire.

“After moving to Warrington I joined Delamere Forest G.C aged 12 and soon became a member of Cheshire’s Development Squad where I was coached by Mark Johnson who really helped me develop my golf .

“I won my first Gross men’s competition at Delamere Forest G.C when I was 13 yrs old , which at the time was my proudest win .

“I progressed up to Cheshire U14 ‘s under the coaches of Graham McCormack, Mark Johnson and Matt Turnock and enjoyed competing in lots of tournaments doing well in most competitions, learning all the time to get better and better.

“I progressed up to Cheshire U16’s in 2026 and along with the coaches Andrew Henshall, John Heggarty and Peter Barber, who all seemed to understand me and my golf, I really started to excel given more opportunities to develop my game against other higher level golfers .

“I must also mention Jordan Brookes Cheshire’s Performance Psychologist whose helped with my mental thinking process of golf, Fin Harper my new coach is helping to fine tune my distance control and swing speed .

“And of course my mum and dad who are supporting me through everything Win ,Lose or Draw!

“ So to everyone I’ve mentioned and all at Cheshire Golf my success in 2026 is all down to you

“My current wins are -Cheshire U16 champion (Pryors Hayes G.C), Cheshire Boys champion (Delamere Forest G.C), Lancashire North West Junior Open Champion (Knott End).

“My short term ambitions are to keep playing as much competitive golf as I can whilst learning and striving to be the very best I can be.

“Future ambitions -when I left primary school I wrote in my leaver’s book I wanted to be a professional golfer . When I leave senior school I’ll be saying the same so fingers crossed.

“My favourite golfer is Rory Mcllroy . I like the way he plays going for everything , he’s exciting to watch regardless of how he’s playing Good, Bad or Indifferent!”

Shane finished 16th in the County Boys Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa which followed his first selection for the county men's team against Cumbria at Tytherington.
