Heswall host Cheshire Ladies Finals

Heswall Golf Club provided a terrific venue for the Cheshire Ladies Team finals when the winners of the four East Cheshire Inter League competitions (ECICS) took on their West Cheshire counterparts to become Cheshire champions.

Heswall, with its terrific panoramic views over the Dee Estuary and the Welsh hills, presented a challenging course in great condition and friendly support from their staff and members to make this a day to remember for all of the players and drew plenty of deserved compliments from club and competition organisers.

The first match was the Business Ladies competition played at Bromborough GC between Alsager (East) and Pryors Hayes (West) on the day before the other three finals and a close contest was won 2-1 by Alsager.

Next day the first match was between the A teams of Sale and Delamere Forest and first off the tee for Sale was Cheshire and England Seniors star Cath Rawthore and she set her team off well with a 4/2 win over Christine Lancaster.

Sue Oldham doubled Sale’s lead with a 2/1 win over Chrissie Harding-Roberts.

Then Delamere showed their fighting spirit with wins from Jan Pomfret 3/1 over Julie Matthews, Rhian Jones by 5/3 over Caroline Croxton and Claire Makin one up over Sue Barrett taking them in front.

Chris Johnson drew Sale level with a tense one-up win over Carol Keeble and victory for Sale was sealed by Fiona Flanagan 3/2 over Lorrayne Gracie.

Next up in the B team match were Macclesfield (East) against Portal (West ).in another exciting contest.

Amy Lester gave Portal an early lead with a win on the 19th over Sue Collins but Alex Forbes drew Macc level with another thriller on the 19th over Tracy Akin.

Then Macc struck hard with wins for Wendy Higgins 3’2 over Portal Lady Captain Sue Wall, Judy Mutter 5/3 over Joanne Barrett and Sue Orwin 8/6 against Joanne Ridgeley to clinch the title.

Kate Sage pulled one back for Portal beating Gill Evans 4./3 and with victory assured Julie Dunne conceded her match to Anne-Marie Stott to see Macclesfield win the match 4-3.

The final match of the day was for the Plate (C division) between Eaton (West) and Alsager was another thriller.

Tanya Southern (Eaton) won on the 19th over Alison West then Angela Shenton one up over Anne Britton drew Alsager level and this was followed by another win on the 19th for Linda Goddard (Alsager) over Barbara Parker and Alsager clinched victory with wins for Cheryl Plant 3/2 over Lyn Bond and Pat Leese 2/1 over Elizabeth Caulfield with the other two matches being conceded to take Alsager to victory and East Cheshire to a 4-0 clean sweep.

The trophies were presented to the winning teams by Heswall Lady Captain Susan Wright who congratulated all of the teams and supporters, Heswall Golf Club and the competition and team organisers in putting on a great day for ladies golf in perfect weather
