Maiden win for Heswall in Doris Chambers Cup

The Cheshire Ladies Doris Chambers Cup has been one of their most popular competitions since it began at Bowdon GC in 1929 and since 1933 Delamere Forest has hosted the competition- a foursome featuring pairs from Cheshire Clubs – this time 52 golfers from 12 clubs took part over two days.

Delamere as always gave the players a real golfing treat with a fantastic course, superb hospitality and great support from their staff and members.

The qualifying Foursomes Stableford was played on the first morning with the top eight pairs progressing to the Match play quarter finals played in the afternoon.

There were some very closely fought matches with teams from Sandiway, Sale, Heswall and Vale Royal Abbey going through to the final day.

It was a cool and drizzly start to Day Two which brightened up during the day and the semi-finalists teed off followed by 23 pairs playing in the Subsidiary Foursomes Stableford.

The winners of the Subsidiary Stableford were Lynn Griffiths and Lynn Allat (Sandiway) with 40 from Michelle Pretty and Gillian Singh (Prestbury) 37 and Dianne Stow and Jo McGregor (Sandiway) 35.

The teams from Sandiway and Heswall made it through to the final winning their matches 4/3 and 4/2 respectively.

The finalists enjoyed excellent conditions in a competitive game and it was won by Heswall’s Sara Spencer (Cheshire Senior Ladies Champion) and Kelly Marsh by one hole from Janet Carter and Lynne Leutton (Sandiway).

Sara and Kelly set a new record by becoming the first-ever pair from Heswall to win the trophy.

The semi-finalists were Gillian McKenzie and Amanda Roberts (Vale Royal Abbey GC) and Sue Oldham and Jennifer Page (Sale GC).

Lynn Griffiths (Sandiway Lady Captain) summed up the competition: “I would just like to thank Cheshire Golf for organising such fantastic golf competitions, they are extremely well organised and I’ve enjoyed playing in several ladies competitions this year as well as participating in the Cheshire Life members competitions.

“A big thank you to Cheshire Golf, Cheshire President Marjorie Griffiths and her team of helpers and Delamere Forest GC for hosting this prestigious event and our playing partners Julie Dunn and Alison Green.”
