Next generation of Cheshire boys are inducted into coaching group

The work done over the past five years by the Cheshire Golf Development Group (GDG) has reached great heights including winning the English County Boys Championship among other team and individual successes in recent months

Now we are preparing to continue the great work as they saw the fifth intake of boys joining the (GDG) come for an introduction and then an opportunity to play at Hazel Grove Golf Club.

17 of the 18 boys who will be being coached over the next nine months by Mark Johnson and along with their parents were given a brief overview of the coaching on offer before playing a Texas Scramble in teams of three.

Cheshire Boys manager Andrew Henshall (The Wilmslow Golf Club) and who has overseen the dramatic development of Cheshire Boys said: “Mark has looked after the Golf Development Group since it was founded five years ago and already it has produced boys in the last two years who are playing for the County Boys Team.

“The handicaps of these boys today ranged from 12 to 24 and their ages range from 9 to 12. They have already been through a rigorous selection procedure to become a member of this year’s group.

“Today’s event was all about having fun and getting to meet and make new friends.

“Most of whom they will be friends with for the next few years as they progress together through the GDG into the Under 14s, Under 16s and Boys Team before hopefully going on to play for the County men’s team.

“The coaching is provided by the County and includes lessons on putting with Jordan Massey at Torque Golf, psychology, rules and nutrition as well as short game and driving to develop their skills, fitness and knowledge of golf.”
