Denise reports on a busy and enjoyable year

Cheshire Ladies Team Captain Denise Burchell (Sandiway GC) gave those attending  the Cheshire Lady Delegates Meeting at Vicars Cross GC in October her reflection on a busy and enjoyable 2025.

“We began with the A teams played practice matches against Wilmslow men, Cheshire County Ladies Seniors, and a new fixture against a combined Liverpool Universities men’s team.

“The matches were played in great spirit with the results not going our way. We are grateful to The Wilmslow Golf Club, Sandiway Golf Club and Helsby Golf club who hosted these matches, their support of the County is much appreciated.

“The Cheshire County Championships were held at Vale Royal Abbey in June. The semi-finals were highly competitive matches with the 2024 champion Erin Parker reaching the final. We were then entertained with a gripping final with Amy Anson from Prestbury GC winning after two extra play off holes.

“The Championship in 2026 will be held on one day,12th April at Sandiway, a 36 hole event and we hope to attract more entries.

“In the County match week at Hessle Golf Club, we had a depleted team with former County Champion Erin Parker having to withdraw injured at the last minute, we were fourth in the round robin and I was proud of the manner in which my team conducted themselves, a credit to Cheshire and their home clubs. “We travel to Eaglescliffe Golf Club next year and I am very hopeful of improving our position.

“The Ladies English Amateur Championship was held at Royal Liverpool with Lucy Jamieson from Heswall Golf club claiming the title, she topped off her fantastic season by also winning the England Golf Order of Merit. “Emily Mc Burney from Royal Liverpool Golf Club was a losing semi finalist in the English amateur, a very creditable display of excellent golf, I could not be more proud of both women, they were great ambassadors for ladies golf.

“Morgan Bollam our 14 year old rising star from Crewe Golf Club, also had a fabulous season, she has represented Wales Under 18 several times this year, she also qualified via a Europe competition to go to America with the Underated Golf Tour.

“On behalf of Cheshire golf we send our best wishes to Bel Wardle of Prestbury Golf Club, who is off to LET Q school in Morocco in December. “Also to Gemma Clews of Delamere Golf Club and Ashton-on-Mersey Golf Club, congratulations on securing your LET tour card for next year, we will watch your progress throughout the year, and I hope 2026 is a great year for you. “It would be remiss of me not to mention how proud we are of tour professional Brontë Law of Bramhall Golf Club, she has been appointed Vice Captain to the 2026 Ping Junior Solheim cup team, the Captain Anne Van Dam. Good luck Brontë to you and your team.

“It remains for me to thank all the volunteers who help make our events happen, our new competions’ secretaries Fiona Walton of Ringway Golf Club, Sue Hughes from Bidston Golf Club for their tireless work throughout the year.

Denise also found time to show her golfing ability by winning the prestigious Doris Chambers Trophy at Delamere Forest GC with Sandiway team mate Cathy Day.
