Wirral golfer, 9, finishes third at World Junior Championships

A nine year old golfer from Wirral has finished third at the Daily Mail World Championships in Spain.

Buster Airey, who is a member of Heswall GC, sank a putt on the 18th hole of his third round to seal a top three finish at the event held at the Flamingos golf course on the Costa del Sol.

Buster was competing in his second World Junior Golf Championships and after finishing 17th last year, he set himself the goal of making the top ten this time around.

At the end of day one, Buster was in second place after shooting a +5 76, his lowest ever score over 18 holes.

He held onto second place throughout day two meaning he was in the last group on day three.

Proud mum Zoe said “The course at Villa Padierna in Marbella is tough and it’s a long three days competing.

“On the 18th Buster needed a par putt to finish in the top 3. As he was in the last group, all of his golfing friends had finished their rounds and had gathered to support him on the 18th. He held his nerve and holed the putt and a huge cheer erupted and there were lots of tears.

“We’re so proud of how Buster took all his months of practice and hard work and turned it into something magical on the course” said Zoe.

“Dad Colin was on the bag each day and they made a brilliant team – he is so proud of what Buster has achieved.”

Since coming third in the Irish Open last year, Buster has also been selected for the Cheshire County Development Team.

Next up for Buster is the Marco Simone Invitational in Rome next month, where he will play on the same course where Europe won the Ryder Cup in 2023.
