Ringway Golf Club ex Captain delighted with his charity fund raising

Ian Rankin enjoyed a great year as Captain of his beloved Ringway Golf Club and with the fund raising efforts for his chosen charity of NSPCC. He was delighted to welcome Emma Smyth of NSPCC down to Ringway GC to present her with a cheque for £8,519.15 for the charity.

Ian said: “I chose NSPCC as my charity for a national charity well known to members and to sit alongside Lady Captain Pat Taylor’s local charity of St Ann’s Hospice.

“Another connection to my chosen charity is my wife Kate who has worked with the local NSPCC committee fund raising for many years. The main fund raising effort was a Charity Golf Day back in the summer when members donated auction prizes at the dinner and funds were also raised during the golf day.

“I would like to give a special thanks to event organisers, Past Lady Captain Geraldine Senior and Gary Kirkwood and on the day to our auctioneer Steve Hannon.”

Emma Smyth added “I came down to the presentation on behalf of our Bowden NSPCC fund raising group of which l am Chair, I am also a member of the main NSPCC Trustee Board.

“Our mission is the prevention of child abuse and neglect and we do this by trying to reach as many children and young people as possible. In our CHILDLINE service, on average, a child contacts us every 45 seconds.

“We have a number of bases throughout the country, including one in Salford, delivering almost 200,000 counselling sessions from those bases in 2023/24.

“We are heavily dependent on our highly trained counsellors to deliver the service and around £1,200 can cover the cost of training one of our counsellors, with £4 covering the cost to answer a child’s call.

“NSPCC Helpline for Adults with a base in our Salford office, is an amazing free facility for adults to phone if they are concerned about a child’s welfare and our bases have responded to over 75,000 contacts throughout the UK, supporting, advising and signposting each concerned caller.

“In addition we do a lot of campaigning work, direct work with children and families affected by abuse in the North West, providing information, resources and courses for professionals and people working with children via over 2.8M visits to our website.”
