James wins English Schools U16 Championship

The Wilmslow Golf Club received well deserved plaudits from players and officials for their superb hosting of the England Schools u16 finals for boys and girls.

Cheshire Schools have only been involved in the competition for two years but they had a great attendance of over 120 players from schools across the county at Wilmslow GC for their championships.

They were delighted to host the national u16 championships with a field of around 60 county schools champions providing some quality golf.

The pre-presentation speeches by England Schools officials reflected perfectly the appreciation from players and parents of the excellent quality of the course, top class hospitality and great work put in by volunteers to make this a really special day for them and their wonderful club.

At the heart of the organisation was Wilmslow Captain and Cheshire Junior Manager Andrew Henshall who received deserved praise for the day’s success. The competition was played over 36 holes with trophies and special prizes for the winners.

It was a day to remember for Cheshire u14 star James Clark (Sandiway GC) who posted rounds of 72 and 70 for a 142 final gross score of -2. James is still only 13 but has a handicap of +1.4!

James’ score was matched by Justin Chenu (Rochester and Cobham GC) with James winning top spot with a better second round.

It was close in the next two places, both on level par, with Ollie Scott (Middlesbrough GC) getting the nod from James Matthews (Gog and Magog GC).

The top girl was Daisy Lee (Lancaster GC) with rounds of 68 and 72 giving her a total of 140- eight under par. This was a particularly impressive performance, as the day before she had clinched the Irish U16 Championship played over 54 holes, then travelled to Wilmslow. What a week!

Next in was Mariella Buchanan (Bristol and Clifton GC) 145 from Millie Marsh (Sherwood Forest) 148.

The top Cheshire girl was Esme Graham (Wallasey GC) on +8.

The boys and girls winners win places in the Daily Telegraph Justin Rose competition later in the year at Quinta de Lago.
