Red Roses rule at Sandiway

Sandiway Golf Club has staged many top county, regional and national competitions over the years and they again showed their class in hosting the Northern Counties Veteran Ladies Golf Championships over three days.

The quality of the course, superb hospitality, great support from Sandiway members and staff and slick organisation by Cheshire officials matched the fantastic weather enjoyed by players and supporters.

The first day was a qualifying medal and the main winners were Best Gross Karen Jobling (Yorkshire) Best Nett Julie Matthews (Cheshire), Over 65 best nett Sandra Paul (Yorkshire), Team Stableford Yorkshire/Lancashire- Vanessa Barrow, Jackie Barraclough, Amy Lester.

The next two days concentrated on match-play with the Championship and the Second Flight trophies at stake

In the Championship making it through to the final were Lisa Chrimes (Lancashire) after beating Karen Jobling (Yorkshire) and Lynn Wass (Yorkshire) who beat Heather Butcher (Yorkshire) to set up a Battle of the Roses in the final.

A gripping contest ended with scores level on the 18th but Lisa Chrimes won the match on the 19th for a Red Rose victory.

In the Seventh Flight final Lancashire’s Sharon Eales made it a Red Rose Double beating Cheshire and England star Caroline Berry 3/2.

Caroline then stepped up in her role as the Northern Counties Veteran Ladies Captain to give well deserved praise to all who made this such a great and enjoyable competition and presenting the prizes.
