Sandiway Stars Shine in Doris Chambers Cup

The Doris Chambers Cup competition has been one of Cheshire Ladies most popular competitions for many years.

Delamere Forest Golf Club have traditionally hosted the competition –  a Pairs Foursome featuring pairs from the same Cheshire Clubs in a very competitive and friendly competition over two days.

The first session saw all of the pairs in Stableford action aiming to make it into the top eight pairs who would progress to the match-play rounds.

Leading in the top eight were Sale’s Susan Oldham and Jenny Page with 37, closely followed by Sandiway stars Denise Burchell, the Cheshire Ladies Captain and Jane Burke the Cheshire Senior Ladies Captain with 36 one more than another legendary Sandiway duo of Barbara Laird and Cathy Day.

Joining them in the match-play quarter-finals rounds were Julie Matthews and Hilary Tarleton (Sale and Reddish Vale), Libby Smith and Sally Bush (Royal Liverpool), Alison Green and Julie Dunne (Sandiway) Gail Powell and Mao Chen (Chester) and Alison Bluck and Tracy Reeves (Wallasey).

Next day it was the semi-finals followed by the final in the afternoon.

Winning the semi-finals were Denise and Jane who needed to go to the 21st hole to beat Gail and Mao and Susan and Jenny who beat Alison and Tracy.

The high-quality final was close with Denise and Jane emerging as the winners by two up to be delighted winners of the historic trophy.

The second day gave the players who did not qualify for the knock-out stages to enjoy Delamere again in a Foursomes Stableford.

The clear winners with 41 points were Chester’s dynamic duo of Kim Harcombe and Diane Dare, four more than Lynn Leutton and Janet Carter (Sandiway) and Christine Hornsby and Kelly Marsh (Vale Royal Abbey GC).
