Girls Golf 2025: A Season of Progress

Cheshire Girls Manager Cathy Day (Sandiway GC) reports on the past season and plans for 2026.

She will be doing a separate article on the outstanding achievements of the top county performers in 2025.

Cathy said: “We played four competitive matches beating Shropshire and winning a trophy but lost to Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire Boys and also again enjoyed a training match against Cheshire Senior ladies at the start of the season which always serves as a great learning opportunity for both young and old!

“The Junior Jamboree was held at Gosforth over two windy days with the team of Isobel Smith (Bromborough), Mia Brooker (Sandbach), Isabella Donnelly (Wallasey), Keira Saunders (Royal Liverpool), Phoebe Henderson and Nancy Hodgson (Wilmslow)- a fantastic event in which our team came third and Isabella came second in the Stableford competition on the first day in a howling wind.

“We had great support from Marjorie Griffiths, Den Burchell and Julia Wilkinson for their support over the three days and our team were a dream to look after.

“Our domestic competitions went well with some excellent golf and worthy winners and the change in format for the Wheatsheaf Trophy increased the number of entries.

“The Presentation Day at Bramhall was a great success with 28 players in action plus 11 helpers from county officials and parents.

“There were over 70 people who came along and we handed out over 40 prizes and certificates.

“The new coaching sessions are already underway across the county with coaches, Gary Norcott, Mark Pilling and Jason Dransfield working with seven groups with spaces for 42 girls from only 83 across the county on active WHS handicaps and we will be looking to double that in the next three years.

“For the future of Cheshire County Girls Golf we need to be encouraging girls to start playing in club competitions to get their handicaps. We rely on clubs and ladies sections in particular to encourage girls to become full members of each ladies section to keep ladies and junior girls strong in Cheshire golf.

“People I would like to thank include our Girls Captain Eryn Gravett (Astbury) who despite missing most of the season through injury was still there at all of our matches and event to support the girls and county officials.

“Her successor is Naomi Willans (Astbury GC) who has trained and played with Cheshire girls for several years and has proven herself more than worthy to be our next Captain.

“Finally I would like to thank the following people for their time, effort and support of Cheshire Junior Girls- Alison Hunt, Beca Bollan, Richie Chambers, Christine Hornsby, Marjorie Griffiths, Den Burchell, Julia Wilkinson, Viv Kenwright, our coaches Mark, Gary and Jason and all of our parents and club members for making sure that we have a Cheshire Girls Junior section.
