Hazel Grove juniors win inter-league finals

The North West Junior Inter League team finalists had a great day at Stockport Golf Club as they competed for the championship trophy.
Cheshire Junior Organiser Graham McCormack has seen the Mid Cheshire Junior League grow year on year and help with the development of junior golfers but winning the NWJL title has eluded them for the last five years.
On a lovely day of weather and a superb course backed by a friendly welcome from all at Stockport there was some terrific golf played on the course by the talented juniors.
Helping Graham on the day in doing the starting and trophy presentations was the 2023 Cheshire President Tony Gregory, recently appointed as the Stockport GC Vice Captain ansd his wife Linda, recently appointed as the Stockport GC Lady Vice Captain.
The teams in the contest were MCJL champions Hazel Grove GC, Wirral Champions Bromborough GC and Southport and District champions Southport and Ainsdale GC.
There are five players in each team with their top four Stableford scores added together and in the event of a tie the fifth player’s score decides the winners.
It is Hazel Grove’s first season in the MCJL and they won the Cheshire u16 team championships in 2023 and they were given a flying start with Thomas McCann posting 36 points.
He was given great support by Jayden Tommy 35, Jeremy Ju 32 and Jamie Ernill 31 and Oscar Reeder-Hirst clinched victory with a stunning 38 points for a total of 141.
Next in were Southport and Ainsdale 125 with Ben Payne having their top score of 35.
It was two more than Bromborough with Connie Shannon their leading scorer with 36.
A delighted Hazel Grove junior organiser Kathy Glazier said: “Hazel Grove have had a fantastic season in the MCJL winning their league, finals day and now the overall final.
“Every junior contributed throughout the matches and that all did a good score in the final.
“My thanks go to James Glazier for helping with team matches and all of the parents who gave lifts to the players throughout the season.”
Tony Gregory said: “The course was in excellent condition with some very respectable scoring off low handicaps.
“Graham as usual organised with such enthusiasm it is infectious.
“The players were all very polite and well behaved and it is refreshing to see such social skills being encouraged and developed whilst still maintaining high standards of golf.
“Some top professional sports players could learn from their behaviour!”
The final word from Graham: “I am one very happy chairman of MCJL after five years of being the bridesmaid!
“Stockport did us proud, the course was in lovely condition and the hospitality was top drawer.
“My special thanks go to my cohort Stuart Richards (Sandiway GC) who did a superb job organising the mathematics and final results and to Tony and Linda for all of their help during a great day for junior golf.”
