Desmond wins Cheshire Cat

The Cheshire Cat competition enjoyed another great two days at Wilmslow and Stockport Golf Clubs with 132 top players from across the country playing in the World Amateur Ranking event.

The Cheshire Cat involves 36 holes at Wilmslow playing for the Wlmslow Crow Trophy and the Stockport Salver at Stockport GC with the top aggregate score over four rounds deciding the winner of the Cheshire Cat Trophy.

The Cat was created in 2015, and the brainchild of Stockport and Cheshire legend David Peel, to create a world amateur ranking event in Cheshire.

Stockport created the Stockport Salver and combined it with the Wilmslow Crow to qualify it for WAGR status.

John O’Neil of Wilmslow GC and the R and A helped to fast-track it to gain WAGR status in its first year and David Peel was the first winner of The Cat.

A couple of players who have played in the Cat in recent years Matthew Jordan and George Bloor were playing in this year’s Open Championship at Portrush.

Dean Brady, one of the Cat organisers, thanked both clubs and their greens teams for the excellent support they have given to the Cat over the years.

The trophies were presented to the winners after conclusion of play in the Salver and presenting the prizes were former Cheshire President Tony Gregory, the Vice Captain of Stockport GC and his wife Linda, the Lady Vice Captain of Stockport GC and Wilmslow GC President Pauline Clegg and and Wendy Taylor Wilmslow legend and Honorary Cheshire Vice President.
