Nelson wins fourth Seniors title

A quality group of over 50 players enjoyed the Cheshire Men’s Senior Championships played at the fabulous facilities, on and off the course, at Vicars Cross Golf Club.

With such a talented group of players in the field it was a great competition which went to the wire of the final match to decide the result.

The first day saw Phil Leadbetter (Disley Golf Club) take a slender lead into Day Two from playing partners Denver Brazier (Vicars Cross) and Chris Turner (Portal) with several players hot on their heels.

But the star of the second day was true Cheshire Seniors legend David Nelson (Northenden GC) who had a magnificent back nine holes of 31 to finish on 69 to add to his opening day score of 76 and a two-round total of 145.

This left him two shots clear of Guy Hindle (Warrington GC) who won a cpo for the runners-up slot from Phil Leadbetter.

It was the fourth time that David has won the Championship with previous wins at Reddish Vale in 2011, Sandiway and Ringway and he tied gross with his age of 69 with his final round at Vicars Cross and he will now represent Cheshire in the England Seniors County finals at Woodall Spa later in the year .

David said: “Vicars Cross was set up to be very tough being so firm and bouncy and some difficult pin spots on both days.

“This is why there was only one level par score in the two days and only one under par which was mine! “ I would like to compliment Cheshire Golf who always do a good job of running events.”

Cheshire Vice President Marjorie Griffiths opened the presentation ceremony by thanking all at Vicars Cross GC for their superb support before and throughout the competition, county officials and players for making this such an excellent competition and presented Vicars Cross Vice Captain Peter Meggison with a Cheshire plaque for hosting the event.

Peter then presented the G.E. Northam Trophy to Dave and prizes to the winning players.

Cheshire official Robert Hamilton concluded the competition: “This brings to a close a very enjoyable two days at Vicars Cross with tremendous golf, and magnificent hospitality on and off the course and in the clubhouse- on behalf of the players and everyone at Cheshire Golf, it is an understatement to say this was much appreciated and many thanks to everyone at the club who made this such a special event.”

Results – no player can win more than one prize and the order is Championship, Gross and Net prizes.
