Howard is worthy winner of Cheshire award

The Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs introduced a new award- the Lifetime Achievement Award at their annual county dinner in 2022.
Cheshire President Tony Gregory announced: “The winner of the 2023 award joined his golf club, Shrigley Hall, over 20 years ago and served as Captain in 2006-7 and President in 2010-11.
“At his club he also served on the club council and match and handicap secretary for many years, having been responsible for organising the Winter Pairs competition, a task he still takes on.
“His most notable achievement is setting up a working party which meets every week and carries out work that would be difficult for the green staff, especially in the busy summer months
“Howard and his team have helped to transform the golf course which is much appreciated by all of the members and has been used by the County for a number of events in recent years always receiving positive comments.”
Howard added: “Our Wednesday working party Rod Scott, Peter Will, Peter Cartledge, Mark Brierley (plus others -not every week) take on the little jobs all over the course that the green staff have not the time to do. Litter picking, path repairs, trimming around distance and marker plates, hedge trimming.
“Our bigger jobs include (installing the winter mats – work on the practice nets and larger projects) and I with some of the above named working with the Head Green Keeper Ben Evens and his staff.
“All the above get a big thank you from me and all Shrigley members.
“The original club pro at Shrigley Granville Ogden was my inspiration he made golf a happy thing to do through good and bad times he always had an answer for any problem I had.
“In later years the same can be said about Antony Herbert now at Bramhall Golf Club.
“One of the best things that has happened in the last few years is seeing the county matches we have had at Shrigley for the younger players (I now go to watch them at other venues) why stand in a crowd to watch the pro’s when these young lads are so good!”
