Denise is new Ladies captain

The final AGM for the Cheshire County Ladies Golf Association at Vicars Cross GC saw Denise Burchell installed as the Ladies Captain for the next two years which promise to be a very exciting time for ladies golf in Cheshire.

Denise said: “I am honoured to be Cheshire Ladies County Captain and I am looking forward to meeting people from clubs all around the county in my two years of office,

“I hope that the ladies in Cheshire clubs will get involved in some of the county competitions at a variety of courses around the county.

“I have been a competitive sports woman all my life, playing hockey, netball, table tennis and cricket, I love team sports and enjoy the camaraderie of your team mates and I also enjoy crown green bowls, playing for Castle Ladies.

“I started my golf career at Burslem Golf Club in 1985, later joining Astbury Golf Club as a full member where I was encouraged and nurtured at the club by a friend Sybra Eardley, who has strong county connections.

“We enjoyed playing new courses and competitions, which took us to a beautiful and challenging course at Royal St David’s Golf Club, Harlech to play in their ladies week.

“It rained and the wind blew all week, I vowed never to return.

“The following year we entered the competition week again, then joined as members.

“I have now been a member for 26 years and in 2018 I was honoured to be their Ladies Captain.

“I have played in their scratch team and we have successfully defended the North Wales Scratch Shield for the last 15years.

“My home club is Sandiway golf club, a beautiful course in the heart of Cheshire, and I have enjoyed playing in various teams with the club.

“I have also represented the British Police playing golf up and down the country.

“My golf swing has been fine tuned and modified over the years by Judy Statham, a long time friend and retired PGA professional.

“Playing golf, you are lucky to meet a diverse group of people, it’s fascinating sharing life’s experiences as you negotiate the course.

“At the AGM it was sad day for some of the county dignitaries of the former CCLGA as we held our final meeting.

“These were ladies who had put their heart and soul into the association and I think that they can reflect on a job well done.

“Due to their efforts and hard work we are now in a great position to move forward as one in Cheshire Golf, with all the exciting opportunities that a strengthened organisation can achieve.

“It is early days, but I am heartened by the positivity of the new board and look forward to a great future for Cheshire Golf.”
