Superb Charity effort at Withington

Withington Golf Club’s Captain John Gill, Lady Captain Liz Bradbury and President Gary Unsworth combined in their year in office to support the Charity Papyrus, the choice of their Captain during their year in office.

They worked hard all year with the support of members and friends to raise the fabulous sum of £13.528.19 and were delighted to invite Mike Palmer, one of the Three Dads Walking, who lives locally, to receive the cheque along with Papyrus representative Vicki Dutton.

John said: “We chose PAPYRUS, because we wanted to support a mental health charity with a local connection (Mike being the local connection)

“The main fund raising event, and highlight, was the charity day on 31 July, on a boiling hot day, where we raised over £8k.

“I would like to give my thanks to Gary Unsworth (President) and Liz Bradbury (Lady Captain) and a big thank you to all the members at Withington Golf Club; their support and generosity was nothing short of incredible.

“On the charity day Mike (not a golfer) made an brilliant par on our fourth hole having hit his tee shot in the bunker!”

Mike added: “The generosity of the Withington Golf Club members will save precious young lives. Not only will the incredible sum raised, £13,528.19, help the wonderful charity Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide continue their work of bringing ‘hope’ to so many, but the awareness raised by having open conversations will lead to vulnerable young people getting the help they need.

“The 3 Dads Walking supports the charity Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide because they are an amazing charity and we have campaigned and raised nearly £1.5 million over the last three years.

“This has helped Papyrus extend their reach and open more hubs in the UK -going from six in 2021 to 20 in 2024.

“Also HOPELINEUK has now become HOPELINE247 which is a 24 hour helpline, staffed by professionals, not only for those under 35 in crisis, but for concerned others looking to support a vulnerable young person.

“3 Dads Walking will continue to campaign in 2025. Our belief is if suicide is the greatest danger to our young people and the biggest killer of under 35’s in the UK we need to be proactive to change this.

“We work with the Department for Education in making Suicide Prevention a compulsory part of the RSHE Curriculum.

“The fact is if our daughters and ourselves had been aware of HOPELINE247 there is a chance Sophie, Emily and Beth may be here today fulfilling their wonderful potential. Their loss drives us on in a belief that other families don’t have to go through the unimaginable pain of a loved one taking their own lives.
