Men gather at Hoylake for pre-season practice

The Men’s County Squad had their final winter session at a chilly but dry Royal Liverpool on Sunday 16 March. Many of last years team are still around to see if they can go one better this term and take the Northern Counties League crown. An added bonus was that the smart new Cheshire Golf kit was distributed and enthusiastically received by all.

Making a very welcome return to Cheshire colours was Wallasey’s Josh McMahon, after a spell in the professional ranks. Josh is a former Lytham Trophy winner, England international and Cheshire champion whose pedigree will certainly strengthen our squad considerably.

Also involved were several players from the Boys’ Squad who will benefit from the experience of playing alongside the regular county players.

With three friendly matches in April against Sandiway, North Wales and The Army there are plenty of opportunities for all squad members to stake a claim for selection in the first Northern Counties League match, away to Cumbria, on Saturday 10 May.

In the meantime, the Boys Team have the little matter of attempting to retain the Four Counties Tournament trophy against Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Shropshire & Herefordshire at the wonderful Wallasey G.C. on 16 / 17 April.

Our thanks again to Royal Liverpool for their continued and very generous support of Cheshire Golf. Without their support and that of all the other clubs we would not be able to hold our Championships and matches, be they Men’s, Ladies, Senior or Junior.

We return to RLGC on August 16th, when we take on Durham in the penultimate match of the 2025 Northern Counties League. This is a milestone event, as it will be the 750th Cheshire Men’s team match. That’s a lot of golf and a lot of miles travelled since we played our first ever match against Lancashire in 1921! And very fitting that it will be played at Royal Liverpool, where that inaugural match was held 104 years ago.

Let’s hope for a successful first year under the Cheshire Golf banner.
