John Heggarty: President 2025

Cheshire Golf’s President John Heggarty (pictured) was delighted to be asked to be the 2025 Cheshire County President. He has the distinction of being the first professional golfer to be the county President.

He brings a wealth of experience and talent to the role and he outlined his outstanding career in golf with highlights along the way. John said:”I started my golf in Scotland at Dumfries and County Club and played in the Scottish Boys Championships before turning professional in 1975.

“I spent 18 months at a Glasgow course called Hayton before moving to Shaw Park in Alloa.

“I was appointed as assistant professional at Royal Liverpool GC in 1978 before getting my first head professional professional’s job at Wirral Ladies GC, aged 21.

“I spent two years there before being appointed as head professional at Royal Liverpool in 1982.

“Some of the roles I have undertaken since then are: Chairman of the North Region PGA, PGA Board of Directors for 20 years, a Ryder Cup Board member, Captain of the PGA of GB & Ireland, PGA

Master Professional (85th in the history of the PGA), PGA tutor and examiner, Cheshire County Coach, Played on the Sunshine and Australian Tour and Royal Liverpool head pro from 1982-2023.

“During my career I have met very many people who have had an influence on how to manage people, how to be decisive but not arrogant, to never to be too complacent to ignore advice and most importantly to never stop learning and improving.

“As a proud member of the PGA and a long-time coach to Cheshire Golf I was truly honoured to be asked to become the 2025 Cheshire County President.

The unified County structure is stronger for the amalgamation of the Women’s and Men’s games and I look forward to supporting all areas of Men’s and Women’s golf during my Term in office.”
