Sale ladies rule on the Mersey

The annual Mersey Ladies Shield is one of the most competitive and friendly competitions played between the five Mersey clubs- Chorlton, Didsbury, Northenden, Sale and Withington each year.

The competition is hosted each year in turn by the clubs and a full field enjoyed a superb day hosted by Chorlton Golf Club.

They provided a pristine course with magnificent greens and challenging holes, backed by great hospitality in their historic clubhouse with great support from all of the staff and members at Chorlton G throughout a busy day and fantastic weather.

The competition is a BB Stableford with the top six scores added together for an aggregate team score

The competition matched this going down to last groups before the result was known with a string of impressive scores.

Sale got off to a solid start with Margaret Lennon and Chris Conville opening their account with 41 points, soon matched by experienced colleagues Sue Barrett and Sophie Casey.

But after a slow start Didsbury began to hunt them down with good scores from Lady Captain Margaret Lloyd and Louise Biddlecombe 41 and Sally Lamb and Adele McNeillie 39.

In the end Sale emerged with an aggregate score of 239 to finish three clear of Didsbury to take the Mersey Shield back to Sale.

Next up were Chorlton 229, Withington 226 and Northenden 211.

The top individual pair on the day were Paula Gerrard and Sonja Garrity (Northenden) 43, one more than Nicola Sinclair and Val George (Withington).

The presentation was introduced by Chorlton Captain Peter Johnson and Northenden Lady Captain (the previous Mersey Ladies Champions) Paula Underwood to Sale Lady Captain Sarah Roper.

The prizes to the Sale team and individual winners were presented by Peter Johnson to set up suitable celebrations for the Sale team.

Peter gave deserving thanks to the players, team organisers and his own club for making this another special day.

Also celebrating was Didsbury’s Jenny White who had her first ace in 38 years of golf on the tricky par three 17th and she also received a prize in recognition of her success.
