Matty Griffiths Shines in Spain

Lymm Golf Club’s rising talent Matty Griffiths delivered an outstanding performance at the Junior European Open 2025, finishing an impressive fifth in one of Europe’s most competitive junior championships.

Matty, who will serve as the Cheshire Golf Boys Captain in 2026, continues to strengthen his reputation as one of the region’s most promising young golfers.

This year marked Matty’s third consecutive appearance in the Junior European Open finals, having also qualified in 2023 and 2024. He booked his place for the 2025 event after a strong qualifying performance at Reddish Vale Golf Club in September.

The finals, staged just outside Málaga, Spain, were played across the challenging championship layouts of La Cañada and Azata Golf Club.

The tournament brought together over 100 elite junior golfers, each competing in four qualifying rounds, with their best two scores counting toward the cut.

Only the top 30 progressed to the final day. Matty produced his best showing yet at the event, carding qualifying rounds of –3, –2, finishing at five under par and comfortably making the top-30 cut.

He then went on to secure a superb fifth-place finish with a final round of -1, marking a significant milestone in his junior career.

A notable highlight of the week was Matty being selected as one of only two boys chosen by Sky Sports Golf to be followed throughout the event. Their coverage of his progress will be broadcast on Sky Sports Golf in December, providing national exposure for both Matty and Cheshire Golf. Matty’s excellent performance in Spain, his vital contribution to the Cheshire win in the English County Boys Finals in August, along with his upcoming role as Cheshire Boys Captain, reflects his consistency, maturity, and growing stature within junior golf.
