Jake takes Route 66 to Championship Win

Jake Hibbert, pictured with County President Tony Gregory, fires stunning final round to clinch County Championship at Eaton

THE cream of Cheshire golf enjoyed three great days of competition at the magnificent venue of Eaton Golf Club.

They provided a pristine course with immaculate and challenging greens and plenty of punishment for wild shots. Backing this was excellent hosting and support from all sections of the club and three days of good weather.

The first two qualifying rounds reduced the field to 40 players and leading in with rounds of 69 and 71 was Jake Hibbert (Delamere Forest) to take the Darlington Trophy

The first three rounds were won by Joel Cann (Sandiway) 69, Daniel Hayes (Bramhall) 70 and Sam Johnson (Astbury) 67 to set up a dramatic final round with several players in title contention.

There was no stopping Jake Hibbert who posted a superb final round of 66 to win the Championship Trophy with a total of 283. It took him home from Sam Johnson (winner of the Israel Sidebottom Trophy) by a shot followed by Haminder Matharu (Queens Park) 287 and Dan Hayes 288.

Jake also picked up the TPD Taylor Trophy as the leading Colt aged 22 or under.

Jake will now represent Cheshire in the English County Champions Tournament at Woodhall Spa on September 17.

Also representing Cheshire will be the Sandiway team of Chris Harrison, Joel Cann and Liam Gobin after winning the County Club Team Championship with a score of 890, beating Warrington by a shot.

The winner of the Over 35’s prize was Haminder Matharu and also receiving a trophy was Eaton’s Roy Claxton with Cheshire President Tony Gregory presenting him with a Cheshire plaque for his club’s superb hosting of the competition.

Tony also gave deserving praise for all of the Cheshire officials and volunteers in helping to make this another excellent championship and a great advert for Cheshire golf.
